1 2 3 Magic Effective Discipline for Children 2 12 123 Magic

Previously available as a booklet in conjunction with a workshop and as a video, clinical psychologist Phelan’s simple, effective child-management program has now been issued as a trade paperback. The gist of the plan is to enable parents to discipline children, ages 2 to 12, by instituting a system of counting and time-outs, delivered straightforwardly and unemotionally. How the regimen is used to stop undesirable behavior, stimulate desirable conduct, and cope with children’s testing is conveyed in Phelan’s candid style, filled with common sense, concrete examples, and lots of reassuring humor. Time-and parent-tested, the methods are applied in identifiable situations (pouting, bedtime, dressing) as well in the all-too familiar incidences of children testing and manipulating their elders. Best of all, the method enables parents to control their kids without yelling . . . or worse. In addition, Phelan covers homework, active listening, self-esteem, behavior in public, and the use of his method in schools. An excellent, workable, and supportive resource for parents and educators. Irene Wood

4 Stars Wonderful tool, need consistency, as with any method
This was a well written, and interesting book, with a TON of great tips, ideas and examples for frustrated parents who are sick of yelling! With four small kids under 8, (now 3,5, 7 &
it was nice to have this book. I’ve had it for years and used it successfully with all my kids.
An added bonus is, now that my kids are all in school, the school is using this system as well!! So I’m already familiar with it and so are my kids! Made for an easy transition to school rules for my girls!
I must say, that if you’re not up to being consistent and all caregivers on the same page, you’ll not be as successful. I find that when we slack off for a while, things start going back to chaos! I know growing up in the age of “a good spanking will cure it all”, I like having alternative methods that TEACH and help my kids to learn to think for themselves about the consequences of their actions.
Another great read was “Love and Logic for early childhood”. Gotta love those logical consequences! Oooo…..didn’t pick up those legos and the dog chewed them all up….what a shame…..
3 Stars Condescending, mildly useful. Could have been a pamphlet.
The guts of this book could have been written in 5 pages, easily. I found reading it tedious and condescending. And we’ve found “counting” to be less than helpful. It may work well for some kids with easy temperaments (but then, why would you be buying a book, right?), but our daughter needs something else.

5 Stars it works
This is a simply and clearly written book that presents techniques you can use to help you discipline your kids in a positive and effective way. It has worked for us..not perfectly, but we’re way ahead having read it and tried to employ the techniques.
5 Stars It Works!!
I have only had the book for a couple weeks and have been doing the discipline as described in the book and it is working really well. I have a 3 year old boy who is very active and very head strong, but this system is really helping a lot.

5 Stars Review from a child psychiatrist
I’m a child psychiatrist and can tell you that this book is great. Helpful for all parents, not only parents of extremely defiant children. Talks about the power of positive feedback, versus persistent punishing, etc. This is what child mental health professionals use and teach and it works. Its also easy to read and interesting.
5 Stars positive discipline
This book is a wonderful guideline for positive discipline. After reading this book our family dynamic changed for the better. My 3 and 5 year olds have responded great to high fives, hugs, and their sticker charts for accomplishing goals of going to bed, listening, talking nicely, and sharing. Thank you Dr. Kazin for sharing this method of discipline.

4 Stars Good starting point resource
Great resource for the aspiring writer. However, by publication time, the info as to whether or not publishers are accepting submissions can be out of date. Do yourself a favor and check the publisher website for any updated submission guidelines. Often there is additional information available there that is essential for a successful submission. Or you may miss out on an opportunity, where the book says the publisher isn’t accepting submissions, but the website (which is more recent info) indicates submissions are being accepted. I enjoyed the articles interspersed throughout the directory pages. I still use this book as a starting point.
4 Stars Be sure to check the websites!
The book has great contact information and general guidelines, but BE SURE TO CHECK THE WEBSITES. Many publishers post ‘no longer accepting submission’ messages on their websites, and you may as well save the postage and effort, regardless of what the book says. As publications like this are static, it’s best to research for events that outdate what has been printed.
5 Stars Necessary Tools

5 Stars Great Reference!!
This is a really great book full of a ton of helpful advice. I really like to write and people have been telling me for years that I should try to publish the kids’ books I write for my sister. The Scholastic website recommended this book and I’m so glad I got it because I had no idea all the different elements there were to consider when publishing a book! The only thing is that after I read this book I felt a little depressed at the prospect of getting my book published. This book definitely doesn’t give you false hopes, LOL!! But at least they present a realistic view.
4 Stars Children’s Writer’s & Illustrator’s Market 2009
Some good articles, especially regarding things like query letters, and of course, the listings that make researching much easier.
